LEOPOLD I (1790-1865). First King of independent Belgium. Autograph Letter Signed ('Leopold') to [Charles] Grey (2nd Earl, 1764-1845, Prime Minister), 2½ pages 8vo, Marlborough House, 15 July 1831. Setting forth the terms on which he wishes the annuity given him by Parliament to be utilized, declaring that as King of Belgium he will not draw any income, but appoint trustees to administer the annuity for him. '... I shall require my trustees to maintain in a state of complete habitation and of repair, the house, gardens, and park at Claremont; and further to pay all the salaries pensions & allowances which I shall deem a proper reward to those persons who have claims upon me for their faithful services during my residence in this country. ...'The wives of Leopold, an uncle of Queen Victoria, included Princess Charlotte, only daughter of George IV, Karoline Bauer (a morganatic marriage) and Louise d'Orléans, daughter of Louis Philippe.
