POUND, Ezra (1885-1972). American poet.
Two large sheets of Chinese pictograms executed with a brush by Pound and later inscribed and signed by him in red ball-point [1959]. In black ink on brown paper, each sheet ca 490 x 340 mm (19½ x 13½ inches), folded down the centre to form 8 folio pages.
Pound is known to have a life-long interest in Chinese pictograms. See A Serious Character, by Humphrey Carpenter, 1988, passim. The present manuscript is believed to be a form of Chinese greeting to a friend.
