Autograph Letter Signed to the artist E[dward] M[atthew] Ward, 1 page 8vo, Tavistock House, 31 May 1854 ('5 o'Clock afternoon'). Rearranging an appointment, as he is not free on the date Ward has named, with a note on the reverse 'to consult about his costume for the play of "Not so bad as we seem"/ W M Ward'.
Not so Bad as We Seem was written by Bulwer Lytton for Dickens and his theatrical company to perform in aid of the Guild of Literature & Art.
