GASKELL, Elizabeth Cleghorn (1810-1865). Novelist. Autograph manuscript, one 4to page from Sylvia's Lovers, on blue paper, with a signature glued to the foot of the page. The page is headed with a '2' and begins They were there; Sylvia spoke..Traces of former mounting on the reverse, somewhat ragged at the edges. Sylvia's Lovers was published in 1863, two years before Mrs Gaskell's death at what seems to us the early age of 55. It describes the intrigues of the press-gangs towards the close of the 19th century, and takes place in 'Monkshaven', based on Whitby where she stayed in order to study the character of the place.
