Making arrangements for the engineering examinations for which Browne set the questions and acted as an examiner. '... It is proposed on further consideration to reduce the time for each paper to 3 hours, partly to save the Examiners trouble, & partly on account of the great length of the examination as it is. ...'Walter Raleigh Browne (1842-1884) was a civil engineer and founder of the Society for Psychical Research. He often lectured on evidences of Christianity and organized a private conference with the Archbishop of Canterbury with the aim of encouraging men of science to reaffirm their religious beliefs and to publish a series of articles in the Contemporary Review on the state of the various sciences. The two letters of 1878 are extremely early examples of typewriting. The Remington typewriter was first marketed in 1875 and other models did not follow until the late 1880s and 1890s. [No: 7366] A very early example of typewriting in 1878
