STEPHENSON, Robert (1803-1859). Civil engineer.
Autograph Letter Signed to his colleague Thomas E Harrison, 1 page 4to with integral address-leaf, Newcastle, 24 August 1837. Requesting that the bearer, a German engineer (?Mr Picknell) be allowed to examine the stationary engines on the ill-conceived Stanhope & Tyne railway.
Together with a 1-page 8vo Autograph Letter Signed from John Clayton to Harrison, referring to the purchase of land for the Usworth-Penshaw-Darlington line, which completed the link between London and Newcastle. He notes that he had altered the dimensions of the bridge in the specification, possibly the Victoria Bridge over the River Wear.
