RUTHERFORD, Ernest, Baron (1871-1937). Physicist. First to split the atom.
Menu for the Cavendish Dinner, Cambridge, 1924, signed in pencil by Rutherford and 33 others, mostly physicists, a few in ink, drink-stain. A remarkable souvenir with the signatures of many of the most distinguished physicists of the age. The drink-stain, so common on menus of course, does not affect Rutherford's signature.
Among those present are J A Ratcliffe, P L Kapitza, Sir E V Appleton, C T R Wilson, Sir J J Thomson, Sir Horace Lamb, J A Crowther, E N de C Andrade, Dr A W Barton, H L Emelius, D R Hartree and H A Wilson.
