SOUTHAMPTON, Thos Wriothesley, 4th earl (1607-1667). Lord High Treasurer, 1660-1667. Letter Signed to Robert Long, Auditor of the Exchequer, 1 page folio with contemporary endorsements at foot and on verso, Southampton House, 30 April 1664. Written during the Civil War, ordering payment of some £6,500 to Sir William Walter out of the King's funds. The text of the letter is in the hand of Sir Philip Warwick (1609-1683), who managed the Treasury for Southampton. '... His Maty by his Letters of Privy Seale bearing date ye 14th day of March in ye 16th yeare of his Maties Raigne having directed ye sume of Six Thousand Five hundred pounds to be paid to Sr William Walter Knt & Barronet or his Assignes in full discharge of soe much money by him lent and paid to other persons upon ye Account of his late Maty at Oxford & men[t]ioned in a Schedule annexed to a Mortgage of sev[er]all of his Maties Forrests Parks & Lands made unto him & others for their security & past under ye Great Seale of England ... And his Maty having directed ye same to be assigned out of ye two last Subsidies granted unto his Maty by Act of Parliamt & yt Tallyes be struck for payment thereof accordingly. ...'After the initial skirmishing in 1642, Charles I established himself at Oxford, which would serve as a centre for the royalist cause.
