ELGAR, Sir Edward (1857-1934). Composer. Autograph Letter Signed ('Ed. Elgar') to [Alfred] Littleton of his publishers, Novello's, 4 pages 8vo, Westerton, Cults, Aberdeenshire, 23 October [1909]. Telling of a banquet for Professor [Charles Sanford] Terry at which McNaught was present, and discussing the words for a carol (probably 'Lo! Christ the Lord is Born' which was published that year). '... I enclose the carol ... I pointed out that in the original antique poem a strong accent curiously fell on the first syllable of the fourth line throughout. Alterations were suggested & I did not know by whom they had been carried out; we cannot possibly let it appear as it is ... 'A pencilled note in another hand states 'Words altered & revise sent to Sir Edward 30/10/09'. The McNaught referred to is William McNaught, Novello's music editor. '... We had a fine performance of the Kingdom at Newcastle ... the Chorus was fine & Herbert Brown, amongst the quartet of the Best singers, was splendid. ...' Apparently unpublished, not in J N Moore, Elgar and His Publishers. [No: 5028] The image is of the third page only.
