THE LORDS JUSTICE
Document Signed by the Lords Justice appointed during the absence of George I, 3 pages folio (worn in the folds), given at the Cock Pitt, 28 May 1719. Ordering payment of half of the half-pay of Major Bucknell (two shillings and sixpence) to Captain Gavin Clealand, who had been unfairly dismissed from his regiment and had sold his commission to Bucknell, who had not paid up.
Signatories at the head of the document include William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury ('W Cant.'), Sir Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle ('Holles Newcastle'), Thomas Parker, Earl of Macclesfield ('Parker'), John Ker, 1st Duke of Roxburgh ('Roxburghe'), Sir Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston ('Kingston'), Henry Grey, Duke of Kent ('Kent, C P.S') and James Craggs the Younger ('J Craggs'). Signed at the foot by George Ireby.
Both Roxburgh and Craggs were later implicated in financial scandals and left public life.
