RUPERT, Prince (1619-1682). Royalist general. Son of Elizabeth of Bohemia.
Autograph Letter Signed to Sir John Kempthorne, ½-page folio with address-leaf in another hand, 'on board the R[oya]l Soveraigne', 13 August 1673. Asking whether Kempthorne's condition will allow him to keep at sea. Kempthorne had just been promoted to Vice-Admiral of the Blue after his actions in the battle of 11 August 1673 in the Third Dutch War.
'I am sorry to know you are in such pains, I desire to know whether your present condition will give you leave to keepe at Sea pray let me know your resolution herein. ...'
Sir John Kempthorne (1620-1679) entered the King's service in 1664 and served as Rupert's flag-captain. He rose rapidly to become rear-admiral of the blue and was knighted as a reward for brave conduct against pirates in 1670. He retired from active service at the end of the Third Dutch War in 1674.
