Read was a director of Routledge & Kegan Paul and received an annual fee. In the Read household economy, the fee was used for special treats (a holiday in France) or other large one-off expenses.
'A fine baby duaghter was born on Saturday ... You came to the rescue last time - is there any possibility of doing the same this time? If you could pay the director's fee due to me, it would be very welcome. I have not yet had any satisfaction from Mrs Guggenheim, and for the moment I am stranded ... .'(10 October 1939).
