DU BARRY, Comtesse (Marie Jeanne Bécu) (?1746-1793). Mistress of Louis XV.
Cheque Signed ('La Comtesse du barry') in the form of a letter to her banker, 1 page 8vo (oblong), 18 April 1781. Requesting that a payment in the amount of 1500 livres be made to M. Humbert the following September.
Louis XV built the mansion of Luciennes for the Comtesse; after his death in 1774 she was allowed to reside there. She received many distinguished visitors in what amounted to her official 'retirement', but was unable to affect the politics of the kingdom.
