NEWMAN, John Henry (1801-1890). Theologian and cardinal. Canonised as a saint in 2019. Autograph Letter Signed ('John H Card[inal] Newman') to a publisher, 3 pages 12mo (c.5 x 3½ inches) on flimsy paper (as is usual), no place, 7 November 1882. Thanking him for sending some volumes, and listing four people to whom he would like copies to be sent. Newman is likely to be referring to his Select Treatises of St Athanasius first published by Longman and subsequently by Pickering in a second edition. The names of those to be sent copies are an interesting selection of his friends: Friedrich von Hügel (1852-1825, Roman Catholic theologian and a regular correspondent of Newman). Sir Rowland Blennerhassett, 4th Baronet (1839-1909, Roman Catholic Anglo-Irish politician). Thomas O'Hagan, 1st Baron O'Hagan (1812-1885). Roman Catholic Irish lawyer and judge. 'Mrs Foljambe, 2 Via Montebello Macao Rome'. See Ever Yours Affly: John Henry Newman and His Female Circle, by Joyce Sugg. Evidently one of Newman's many devoted friends, who had opened a house, presumably in Rome, for Catholic converts who had nowhere else to go. Because Newman frequently used very thin paper there is a certain amount of show-through and a little smudging, which is however rather exaggerated in the illustrations.
