MAUGHAM, William Somerset (1874-1965). Novelist and playwright.
Autograph Letter Signed ('W.S. Maugham') to Mr (probably Michael James, 1870-1956) Holland, 1 page 8vo, Villa Mauresque, 28 February 1953.
'I was interested to get your letter because I slightly knew your aunts. My recollection is that they lived in Upper Berkeley Street, and I used sometimes to go and have tea with them.
I remember reading "The Notebooks of a Spinster Lady," with interest.
I don't think I can agree with you that Augustus had a hard life. ...'
The Notebooks of a Spinster Lady, 1878-1903, was published anonymously by Cassell in 1919. The author was Caroline Holland, (c. 1835-1909), daughter of Sir Henry Holland (1788-1873).
