Autograph Letter Signed ('John Everett Millais') to Sir Henry Holland (1788-1873, physician and traveller), 2 pages 8vo (blank absent), 7 Cromwell Place, 30 May 1871. Apologising for overlook an engagement.

'In the anxiety for the health of my children, I entirely overlooked my engagement to attend your musical party. Two of my girls have been very dangerously ill with gastric fever and are only now beginning to recover.'

Millais and his wife, Effie, the former Euphemia Gray, once the wife of John Ruskin, had eight children, four of them girls.
