SCHLIEMANN, Heinrich (1822-1890). German archaeologist.
Autograph Letter Signed in English to an unnamed correspondent ('My dear Sir'), 1 page 8vo on blue paper of the Athenaeum Club, 25 April no year (probably 1877). Asking for a 'lady's ticket' to be sent to Mrs Heaton at the Graphic Office in the Strand.

Schliemann made his second visit to London in 1877, arriving in March just in time to give an account of his discoveries at Mycenae to the Society of Antiquaries of London at Burlington House on 22 March, following which he was acclaimed an honorary Fellow of the Society. He was greatly in demand to give lectures, and it is likely that he refers in the present letter to tickets for such an event.

Schliemann had been first been proposed for honorary / temporary membership of the Athenaeum Club in 1875 by James Fergusson (probably the architectural historian, 1808-1886). In March 1877 his proposer was Frederick Ouvry (1814-1881, antiquary and lawyer) who was at that time President of the Society of Antiquaries. He was again nominated in several of the following months.
