RUSKIN, John (1819-1900). Author, artist & social reformer. Autograph Letter Signed to 'Lady Louis', 1 page 8vo (laid down on the remains of an album leaf), c/o of Mrs Raven, Coniston, Ambleside, 3 June 1887. Reporting the safe receipt of the 'silver work' which he finds lovely, asking for the price, and sending 'dear love to my sweetheart'. '... She will not believe how anxious I am about her, or how much I would give for a look, - and a real kiss.' Following the death of his secretary, Laurence Hilliard, Ruskin suffered yet another breakdown. This time he railed against Joan Severn, imploring her to leave Brantwood. In the end, he left himself and settled in a hotel where his behaviour excited a certain amount of scandal. He then asked his former servant Kate Raven to take him into her cottage, at the address given in this letter. He eventually returned to Brantwood full of remorse and melancholy. The Severns also returned. The identity of 'Lady Louis' is unknown. [No: 26543]
