CHURCHILL, Lord Randolph (1849-1895). Politician. Father of Sir Winston Churchill.
Autograph Letter Signed to W.T. Stead, 1 page 8vo, Connaught Place, 1 July 1884. Declining a request for an interview.
'I must ask you to excuse me when I say that any such interview as you propose would be very inconvenient to me.'
Churchill was at this time the acknowledged leader among an informal grouping of Conservative back-benchers in the House of Commons known as the Fourth Party. Throughout the 1882 and 1883 sessions the Fourth Party continued to hound the Gladstone government over the invasion of Egypt among other policies.
