ANTONELLI, Giacomo (1806-1876). Cardinal Secretary of State 1848-1876. Letter Signed to the papal vice-consul in Ischia, 1 page 4to with address-leaf (a few marginal tears), Gaeta, 21 March 1849. Conveying the pope's good wishes and apostolic blessing. Antonelli was created Cardinal by Pope Pius IX in 1847 and became premier in 1848 of the Papal States. After his own and succeeding governments had fallen and the revolutionary situation at Rome had led to the assassination of the chief papal minister Count Pellegrino Rossi in 1848, he courageously remained with Pius and planned the Pope's flight to Gaeta, where he was made acting Secretary of State.
