CRANE, Walter (1845-1915). Artist.
Autograph Letter Signed to [Richard] Spiers [the Mayor of Oxford], 2 pages 8vo on separate leaves, Hythe, Kent, 18 September 1898. Thanking him for a letter referring to his appointment to South Kensington [ as principal of the Royal College of Art], and informing him he plans to continue his private work.
'It is gratifying to feel that my appointment at South Kensington meets with approval in so many different quarters & especially so to have the support of artists & teachers. ...'
Crane enjoyed fame and public honours during the 1890s and 1900s. A major retrospective exhibition of his work toured the United States in 1891 to 1892 and from 1893 to 1896 his exhibition toured Europe, where finally his allegorical paintings received the recognition he craved. He was appointed principal of the Royal College of Art in 1898 following an appointment as director of design at the Manchester School of Art in 1893. However, he was less suited to these positions of responsibility and he resigned from the Royal College after only one year.
