PROUT, Samuel (1783-1852). Water-colour painter.
Fine long Autograph Letter Signed to Archdeacon Burney (presumably Charles Parr Burney (1785-1864, archdeacon of St Albans), 4 pages 4to, Hastings, 12 March 1841. A very detailed letter apologising for his delay in writing, describing at length his ill health and fears for completing his forthcoming exhibition, and congratulating Burney on his appointment as archdeacon.
'For five months I was a prisoner without seeing a friend or breathing outdoor air. My sufferings, at times, were first rate, which required large doses of opium, but which produced sad consequences on the nervous system. ...'
Ill health twice forced Prout to leave London, this time to Hastings between 1836 and 1844. He suffered from disabling headaches and from congestion of the lungs throughout his life.

A little soiled, original seal tear just touching a few words.
