Autograph Letter Signed in English to an unnamed correspondent, 1 page 8vo with integral blank leaf, 4 Hobart Place, Eaton Square, 4 June 1844. Enthusiastically accepting an invitation to visit 'the Institute'.
Mendelssohn enjoyed tremendous success in Britain; the year of this letter marking his eighth visit to the country. During this summer of 1844 he conducted five of the Philharmonic concerts in London.
'... Next Thursday I am sorry to say I shall not be able to pay my visit to the Institute, but as my stay will prolong itself for several weeks I shall do myself the pleasure on one of the following Thursdays ...'
The letter is not known to the Leipziger Mendelssohn Ausgabe and is unpublished. There is no invitation known for the time mentioned in the letter. We are grateful to Christiane Schmidt of the Felix-Mendelsson-Haus for conveying this information.
