[JOHN, Augustus (1878-1961).] Artist.
Small archive relating to the funeral and unveiling of the Augustus John memorial in Fordingbridge, Hampshire.

The archive consists of material sent to the Revd R.M. Verity, Vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Fordingbridge and includes 8 Autograph Letters Signed and a postcard from John's common law wife Dorelia McNeill, three Christmas cards from John and Dorelia, all signed by Dorelia, 3 Autograph Letters Signed and 1 Typewritten Letter Signed from Admiral Sir Caspar John (1903-1984, First Sea Lord) and 1 Autograph Letter Signed from Romilly John (1906-1986), in all 16 pages 8vo and 1 page 4to, most from Fryern Court, Fordingbridge, dated from 1955 to 1969.

'... the service in the church was the best part on Sunday. The music was lovely.
I couldn't hear Mountbatten at all. ...'
[Dorelia, 6 October 1967, referring to the unveiling.]
The memorial was unveiled by the Earl of Mountbatten.

After the death of Augustus, Romilly and his wife Kathie came to live at the slowly decaying Fryern Court in order to look after Dorelia. She died in 1989 and was buried at Fordingbridge.

'We would all like to thank you very much for the little service and your morning address at the cremation of my dear mother. ...
My mother's passing came as a great shock. One can only be grateful she died so peacefully without illness or pain. ...'
[Romilly John, 19 August 1969.]

Also included are Verity's notes for the memorial service, plus a small quantity of printed material including catalogues, news cuttings invitations and a printed order of service. Verity's annotations also appear on some of the letters and printed material.
