HARDY, Thomas (1840-1928). Poet and novelist.
Autograph Letter (unsigned) on a picture postcard depicting the harbour and fish market at Southwold, to his sister K[atherine] Hardy, 23 April 1913. Announcing his arrival at Southwold, his hotel ('Swan'), and his plans to go to Aldeburgh the following Friday.

Hardy was in Southwold in order to visit his prolific correspondent and sometime collaborator, Florence Henniker, where his future wife Florence Dugdale was acting as secretary and companion. Hardy's sister Kate sometimes acted as chaperone at Max Gate when Florence was visiting.

Kate was often cited as the role model for Tess, though the rumour that she produced an illegitimate child was never substantiated.
