JOHN, Augustus (1878-1961). Artist.
Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Michael [Sadler] (1861-1943, master of University College, Oxford), 2 pages 4to, 28 Mallord Street, Chelsea, 6 June 1926. Asking for help in his attempt to rent a country house. (A few pencilled notes on the first page.)
'... I am trying to take a house in Wiltshire called Conock Manor, which forms part of a charitable bequest administered by the "Ewelme Almshouses Trust". I had arranged with the present tenant to take the remainder of her lease subject to the approval of the trustees. I now find after a long delay that these gentlemen are not prepared to assign the lease to me. I do not know why. As to the rent, my friend Mr Leverton Harris P.C. has agreed to guarantee it indefinitely. I thought that perhaps you, in your position at Oxford would probably know at least some of the trustees and in that case would be so very good as to say a word on my behalf ... .'
Michael Holroyd makes no mention of this episode in his two-volume Augustus John, 1974-75, and it is not clear why John was interested in the property.
