GODWIN, William (1756-1836). Novelist and philosopher. Autograph Letter Signed to the antiquary Richard Gough (1735-1809), 1 page 4to with address-leaf (laid down on the remains of an album leaf), Polygon, Somers Town, 28 June 1803. Asking for help with information for his intended Life of Chaucer. 'In your British Topography, Vol.I, you mention a lease granted to Chaucer in the year 1399, which Dr. [Richard] Rawlinson caused to be engraved in 1752. I am publishing a Life of Chaucer in two volumes, quarto, & am very desirous to have a full copy of this lease. Mr. [Henry] Ellis of the British Museum informs me that you have a complete collection of Dr. Rawlinson's engravings which you obtained from him, & by his recommendation I take the liberty to request that you would oblige me with the perusal of this. ...' Godwin's four-volume Life of Geoffrey Chaucer appeared in this year, 1803. Godwin was paid £600 for it. [No: 25771]
