'In your British Topography, Vol.I, you mention a lease granted to Chaucer in the year 1399, which Dr. [Richard] Rawlinson caused to be engraved in 1752. I am publishing a Life of Chaucer in two volumes, quarto, & am very desirous to have a full copy of this lease. Mr. [Henry] Ellis of the British Museum informs me that you have a complete collection of Dr. Rawlinson's engravings which you obtained from him, & by his recommendation I take the liberty to request that you would oblige me with the perusal of this. ...'

Godwin's four-volume Life of Geoffrey Chaucer appeared in this year, 1803. Godwin was paid £600 for it.
