Document Signed as king ('Edward R & I') at the head, the text printed, 2 pages folio with blank leaf (two light stains), St James's, July 1904 (day left blank) The commission appointing Sir Gerald Strickland to the Governorship of Tasmania.
Gerald Paul Joseph Cajetan Carmel Antony Martin Strickland, Baron Strickland (1861-1940), was born in Malta and educated in England and in Italy. He was influential in Maltese politics throughout his life, with only brief interludes, one of which was his governorship of Tasmania (1904) and of New South Wales (1913), from which appointment he returned to Malta in 1917. He formed the Ango-Maltese Party in 1921, and after a period in opposition became prime minister in 1927. He had also been an English member of parliament since 1924.
