HERBERT, John Rogers (1810-1890). Portrait and historical painter.
Autograph Letter Signed to Peter Hollins (1800-1886, sculptor), 4 pages 8vo (traces of former mounting in the margin), 7 Grove End Place, St John's Wood Road, 24 August 1865. Discussing the exhibition of his 'Moses bringing down the [Tablets of the] Law [to the Israelites]', and offering one of his son's paintings for Hollins's Birmingham exhibition.

Herbert was commissioned to paint the picture in question as a fresco in the newly rebuilt Palace of Westminster after the success of his Lear Disinheriting Cordelia fresco. It took him several years to complete owing to the deterioration of the fresco as he painted it. In the end, Herbert abandoned his original method and began from scratch using the waterglass method suggested by Prince Albert.
