PRIVY COUNCIL Privy Council of Elizabeth I
Letter Signed by the Privy Council, addressed to Thomas Sackville, Baron Buckhurst [later 1st earl of Dorset], 1 page folio with address-leaf, Whitehall, 20 January 1601/2. A fine example, with nine signatures of Elizabethan statesmen, a little worn and soiled, only slightly affecting legibility, but in largely good condition.

A warrant for the payment of 'coat and conduct' money to James Eveleigh for men levied in Oxfordshire in May and June for service in Ireland.

'... Whereas in the moneth of June 1599 there were the nomber of 50 [altered from '60'] souldyers leavyed in the countie of Oxon' and sent to the Porte of Chester to embarque for the service of Ireland amongst the numbers there likewize leavyed in dyvers countyes of the Realme and the said nomber of 50 men being furnished ['and' deleted] at the countreys chardge w'th coates to the some of xli [i.e. ten pounds] after the usuall rates, as also of conduct money being xli and 40s [2 pounds] paid for the conductors wages, all w[hi]ch amounteth to the some of Twenty two poundes; yt is humbly prayed that repayment may be made hereof out of her Ma[jes]tes Exchequer to the use of the countrey. And further also where there was the nomber of Twenty fyve men more leavied in that county of oxon in the moneth of May last past for her ma[jes]tes like service in Ireland w[chi]ch were furnished in manner as the other w'th coates to the some of vli and of conduct money to the some of vli and the conducters wages vli being xiili in all, of the w[hi]ch like repayment is desyred for the countryes use. These are to pray and reqyre yo[ur] L[ordships] by vertue of her Ma[jes]tes privy seale bearing date the x&viith of January 1599. ... etc. etc.'

Signed by Robert Cecil [later first earl of Salisbury] (1563-1612); [Thomas Egerton [later first Viscount Brackley and lord chancellor] (1540-1617); Gilbert Talbot, seventh earl of Shrewsbury (1552-1616); Edward Somerset, fourth earl of Worcester (ca 1550-1628); William Knollys [later first earl of Banbury] (ca 1545-1632); Sir John Fortescue (1533-1607); Sir John Stanhope [later first Baron Stanhope] (ca 1540-1621); and Sir John Herbert (ca 1540-1617). The letter is also annotated at the foot by the recipient, Lord Buckhurst: 'Mr [Vincent] Skinner make an order / T B'.
