STANFIELD, Clarkson (1793-1867). Painter.
Autograph Letter Signed to Peter Hollins (possibly the sculptor, 1800-1886), 2 pages 8vo (blank part of the second leaf removed), 26 Albion Place, Ramsgate, 22 June 1846. Complaining about his health, thanking him for 'the kind trouble you have taken in the affair of the copy of my small picture of Ischia', and railing against 'the infamous lies the fellow told who sold the thing ...'

By a fortunate delay in leaving Ischia, Stanfield was in Naples to witness the eruption of Vesuvius. His pictures made at the time were extremely popular, several added to the royal collection by Queen Victoria. The most famous, Castello d'ischia, from the Mole may be the one referred to here.
