ARNOLD, Matthew (1822-1888). Poet & critic.
Autograph Letter Signed to Lionel Robinson, 1 page 8vo (somewhat soiled) on embossed writing paper of the Education Department, Harrow, 8 November 1871. Returning Robinson's letter with his own notation on it (not included), and advising him to present it to Sir Francis Sandford, whereupon he is assured of obtaining the permission he seeks.

Francis Richard John Sandford (1824-1893, civil servant), 1st Baron Sandford, spent almost all of his career in the education deparment. He was knighted in 1863 and became Baron Sandford in 1891. Matthew Arnold worked as inspector of schools for thirty-five years.
