COBDEN, Richard (1804-1865). Statesman and reformer, founder of the Anti-Corn Law league.
Autograph Letter Signed to Jos[eph] W. Read, 1 page 8vo with blank leaf (one stain but in good condition), London, 24 April 1849. Agreeing to present to the House (parliament) 'the petition from Upton on Severn [Worcestershire] in favor of International Treaties of Arbitration'.
Joseph W. Read (? b. 1838) is recorded as being clerk to Messrs Kents, of Kent Cottage, Upton (Lascelles Directory 1851). It is not evident why a small country town would be presenting a petition of this nature to parliament.
