VICTORIA (1819-1901). Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Document Signed ('Victoria R' at the head), 2 pages folio on paper with endorsed second leaf and papered seal, St James's, 8 November 1883. A licence to plead granted to Edward Clarke in the case of John David, committed for trial at the central criminal court on a charge of felony. Countersigned at the foot by W[illiam] V[ernon] Harcourt, home secretary. The recipient of the document was probably Edward (later Sir Edward) Clarke (1841-1931, lawyer and politician), who was later to become solictor-general. He was counsel for Captain W.H.
