MANN, Thomas (1875-1955). German writer and Nobel Prize laureate.
Autograph Letter Signed in German to Miss Vera Schwarz, 1 page 8vo with envelope, 1550 San Remo Drive, Pacific Palisades, California, 9 April 1947.
'... [translation:] Your teacher is correct. "Erledigt" ... refers to the main topic of conversation ... Tonio wants to say (feeling bitter and full of irony) "I can go home reassured, I am defined and dismissed". ...'
The recipient was evidently a student at the Cheadle Hulme School in Cheshire, to which the envelope is addressed. The letter is accompanied by another to Miss Schwarz from The Manchester Guardian, giving Mann's address in California. A translation is also included.
