O'CONNELL, Daniel (1775-1847). Irish national leader. Autograph Letter Signed to Lord Duncannon, 1 page 8vo, 16 Pall Mall, 9 April 1840. Sending a petition relating to a projected new bridge in Dublin, and asking for an interview with Duncannon to discuss the matter. 'I have the honour to transmit the petition of the grand jury of Dublin on the subject of the new intended bridge there - and beg the honour of an interview so soon as may suit your Lordships convenience.'John William Ponsonby, fourth earl of Bessborough (1781-1847, politician and landowner) was created Baron Duncannon in 1834 and used that title until he succeeded his father in 1844. Although at the time of the present letter he was Commissioner of Woods and Forests (and 'Land Revenues, Works, and Buildings') he was later to be appointed lord lieutenant of Ireland (1846). Several new bridges were built over the River Liffey in the early nineteenth century, but apparently none between 1828 and 1859 when the Queen Victoria bridge (now Rory O'More bridge) was built. The letter may of course relate to some other location in the city. [No: 25396]
