LYELL, Sir Charles (1797-1875). Geologist.
Autograph Letter Signed to J. Smith, 2 pages 8vo, 53 Harley Street, 9 February 1862. Informing Smith that he had used him name 'in my book in the press' and asking for further information.

'Mr Geikie [i.e. (Sir) Archibald Geikie (1835-1924, geologist and historian)] has told me that you have a case on the coast of Ayrshire of an old ornament in cannel coal lying on till & under 50 feet above the sea-level. ...
'The proof sheets have not yet been sent me so I write to mention it. Mr Geikie did not give me the exact locality, which tho' not indispensible would be useful. ...'

Perhaps to James Smith of Jordanhill, (1782-1867, geologist and a known collaborator with Lyell).
