ARNOLD, Matthew (1822-1888). Poet and critic.
Autograph Letter Signed to [The Rev F.J.] Holland, 2 pages 8vo, Athenaeum (blind stamp), 13 February [1882]. Thanking Holland for papers, bemoaning the burden of his own work, and congratulating him on his preferment to a vacant canonry at Canterbury Cathedral.
'... The tiresome volume drags on still, and will come in due time; but I cannot wait for its coming to say with what cordial pleasure I see the announcement of the admirable nomination made to the vacant stall at Canterbury. I should think the preferment as delightful as it is well merited ... and you will be going back to your old haunts - and those haunts Canterbury! ...'
No letters from Arnold to this particular Holland are recorded in The Letters of Matthew Arnold.
