![]() DEVONSHIRE, Georgiana, Duchess of (1757-1806). Political hostess. Autograph Letter Signed ('G Devonshire') to her housekeeper at Chiswick House, Mrs Hicks, 1 page 4to with address-leaf (some tears), 21 ?February 1805. Asking her to admit Mr Murphy, who was to copy some of the pictures. 'You will admit Mr Murphy the bearer to see Chiswick & the picture whenever he calls. He is to make an enamel copy of the Charles the 1st & Mary in the drawing room for me. He will arrange with you when he is to call & you will have a fire in the room for him when he copies.'Georgiana may be referring to Denis Brownell Murphy (d 1842, miniature painter), who specialised in copies on enamel or ivory. The second (address) leaf of the letter bears pencil sketches and a few notes evidently relating to the copying work, e.g. 'endeavour to do shirt with great neatness', which would appear to have been made by the artist.
