CHURCHILL, Winston (1871-1947). American novelist, politician and painter.
Autograph Letter Signed to Mrs Wedgewood in Kensington, 1½ pages 8vo (facing) with envelope, Crillon Hotel, Paris, 8 November 1917. Explaining that he had received a cable summoning him back to America and regretting that he could not dine with her.

The American novelist was an occasional correspondent of his more famous British namesake. It was the latter who agreed to use to initial 'S' (from Spencer) in his signature to prevent any confusion between them (their lives having been to some extent similar), and the novelist concurred in the arrangment with the proviso that if he too had had a middle initial he would have used it.
