BRUNEL, Sir Marc Isambard (1769-1849). Engineer.
Two Autograph Letters Signed to Messrs Dineley, Coverdale & Lee, 2 pages 4to with address-leaves, Thames Tunnel, November and December 1836. Replying to an invitation to give his opinion on constructing the docks at Erith [south east of London], and in the second letter declining the commission.

'In reply to your letter of the 26th, the object of which is to know my terms for my opinion and instructions on the construction of a Dock at Erith, & for journey there; I beg leave to state that if the person, who has the superintendance of the work, in question, will call upon me with his plans, I shall then be able to form an opinion on what may be wanted and to what degree my services may be required.'[27 November 1836]

'... I cannot however, at this moment, I should even say for some time, take any thing more than I have to attend to in the engagements that are before me.'[6 December 1836]
