PALMERSTON, Henry Temple, Viscount (1784-1865). Prime Minister 1855-1858 and 1859-1865.
Autograph Letter Signed to J[oshua] Toulmin Smith (1816-1869, publicist and lawyer), 2 pages 8vo with blank leaf and original envelope, Carlton Gardens, 29 January 1852. Thanking him for his letter and the 'work which accompanied it', and promising to read it with interest 'on account both of the importance of the Subject and of the known Ability of the author'.
Toulmin Smith's interests at this time included 'reform of the corporation of London, the sewerage and administration of the metropolis, the maintenance public footpaths' etc. [Oxford DNB]. In 1851 he had published his Local Self-Government and Centralization.
