JOHN, Augustus (1878-1961). Artist.
Three Autograph Letters Signed to Alastair Forbes, each of one page small 4to with envelopes, October 1948 to July 1949. Concerning a Romani inscription made by John in a book by Arthur Symons.
John translates the inscription as This night I love thee, o my brother Symons! thine, Augustus John, expresses ignorance of when he may have written it, asks to borrow the book to have it photographed, and apologises for the delay in returning it.
'... I do not remember when or why I wrote these words. I would like to see the drawing or a photograph of it very much as I do not remember it. For a good while I saw a lot of Arthur Symons & corresponded with him.' [31 October 1948]
'... I decided in the end not to reproduce the sketch in my book. ...'
[7 July 1949]
