GANDHI, M.K. (1869-1948). Hindu nationalist and spiritual leader.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Upper House') to his intimate friend H[ermann] Kallenbach ('My dear Lower House'), in English, 1½ pages 8vo, [South Africa], no date but 1910. A small area on the second page rubbed away affecting two or three words above the signature, some old pencilled endorsements, otherwise in good condition.
'I am glad you are finding ?Grenning so satisfactory. I hope he will continue to give satisfaction.
'Have not had a moment to fix up the countess [Sophie Tostoy]letter. Am afraid I cannot leave before Saturday next. Troubles here are enormous. No more time.'
Gandhi lived at about this time with his friend and fellow-lawyer in South Africa at his house, 'Tolstoy Farm', so called because Kallenbach was a disciple of Tolstoy's. It was whilst there that he abandoned the practice of law to embrace voluntary poverty and to to work as a labourer.
