GOULD, John (1804-1881). Ornithologist and publisher.
Autograph Letter Signed to an unnamed correspondent, 2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf (traces of mounting on blank only), 26 Charlotte Street, Bedford Square, 11 February 1870. Thanking him for a cheque, discussing the Birds of Great Britain, and asking when the second part of his book would appear.
'... I cannot send you a perfect list of the Birds who figure in the next two parts of Gt. Britain but have enclosed a list [no longer present] of some of them and I shall be glad to hear what you have to say about them. ...'
Gould's Birds of Great Britain appeared in five volumes between 1862 and 1873 and contained 367 plates, many depicting birds with their young. It was his best-selling work.
