EPSTEIN, Sir Jacob (1880-1959). Sculptor.
Good Autograph Letter Signed to Augustus [?John], 2 pages small 4to on grey paper with integral blank leaf, 18 Hyde Park Gate, 'Wednesday', no date. Arranging to make a bust, thanking him for a cheque, announcing the sale of a bronze to the Liverpool Art Gallery, and asking [?John] to telephone him to make appointments for a sitting.
'I quite understand about the head & if I would do one of you I know I could sell it. Thanks for the fifty pounds: it will help me out of my difficulties for although I have just sold a bronze to Liverpool Art Gallery yet before I get the money passed by the city auditor & treasurer & the financial accountant etc. etc. I might be lying dead of starvation & the legenday cheque will also be lying on the studio floor! To relax my mind I will look forward to next week when I hope to begin working from you. Give me a ring & I will be ready with my clay & things.'
A portrait bust of Augustus John by Epstein, executed in 1916, is now in the National Portrait Gallery.
