BROWNING, Robert (1812-1889). Poet.
Autograph Letter Signed to Lady Layard, 1 page 8vo on folding paper incorporating the address, 19 Warwick Crescent, 18 February 1887. Graciously accepting an invitation for 8 March.
The present letter is one of three to Lady Layard (Mary Enid Evelyn Guest, 1843-1912) the wife of the archaeologist Sir Austen Henry Layard (1817-1894) to whom three letters are also noticed in The Brownings' Correspondence, a Checklist, compiled by Kelley and Hudson, 1978.
'I am happy to say, your kind invitation finds me as able as willing to enjoy your company and that of Sir Henry on the day you mention ...'
The format of the letter is unusual, incorporating the envelope, complete with monogrammed flap, as the second leaf.
