BERLIOZ, Hector (1803-1869). French composer. Good Autograph Letter Signed to the music critic Edward Holmes (1796?-1859), 3 pages 16mo with envelope, no place [probably London], postmark 30 May 1853. A letter presumably written on a visit to London, thanking Holmes obliquely for his praise, expressing the hope of seeing Holmes and [Boleyne] Reeves, to whome he had lent Holmes's article in Fraser's Magazine. According to John Warrack in Oxford DNB Holmes had overcome his initial reservations about the Symphonie fantastique after hearing it performed at Berlioz's first London concert in 1848, and had subsequently become a firm friend of the composer. The letter is written on a piece torn from a larger sheet, rather typical of Berlioz's methods, and bears a penny red stamp. [No: 24966] The image is of the first page.
