PROCTER, Bryan Waller (1787-1874). ('Barry Cornwall'). Poet and solicitor.
Autograph Letter Signed to L.R. Payne, 1¼ pages 12mo (small repair), 32 Weymouth Street, 25 June 1866. Inquiring, on behalf of [John] Forster, about the publication date [of Charles Lamb: a Memoir, and forwarding Forster's request to read Payne's letter on the subject.
John Forster was a colleague as well as a friend. He succeeded Procter as lunacy commissioner, and was of great assistance in the preparation of the memoir to Lamb as well as a similar tribute, Selections from Robert Browning. Both Lamb and Browning, of course, were intimates of Procter.
'... I have declined to show it to him without your permission, considering that some day hereafter you would regret the tone which you made use of in it. ...'
