DEVONSHIRE, Georgiana, Duchess of (1757-1806). Political hostess.
Two autograph quatrains (unsigned) on an oblong slip (inlaid), 72 x 157 mm. (3 x 6 inches), no date.
'Midst many an hommage paid to Portlands shrine
The afflicted muse, would consecrate her part;
For well she bore the honours of her Line
Justness of sense, and rectitude of Heart....'
With a small engraved portrait (slightly trimmed),'Court Beauties No. 10.'
There is a faint pencilled note of identification, but no real clue as to the circumstances and background to the verses, which are undated and on paper without a dated watermark.
Provenance: from a collection formed by A.M. Broadley in 1903.
